Sports Medicine for a Long time in the Promise and the Short of Medicine

Many people are familiar with the use of alternative therapies and medicine. Most of these therapies have little research to support their use, but they remain popular among the general public. Coast Rehabilitation Services, we consider it as a priority and part of our mission, our patients and the public have accurate and timely, especially with regard to health and sports medicine. We understand that not everyone loves the conventional medicine and alternative therapies that can be very profitable. The most accurate information available, people are better able to make decisions about their physical therapy.

A recent article in The Sporting News discussed the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Some professional teams and centers for training in the use of these devices in the conviction that the time of recovery (injury) can be reduced significantly. Several professional hockey teams use hyperbaric oxygen therapy (dose before the game) a decade ago, with disastrous consequences carefully, because he believed it would improve performance. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a way in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen at pressures greater than atmospheric normal (NN) pressure. When treating a patient sits in a closed chamber which is filled with pure oxygen at high pressure, usually for several hours. The healing power of oxygen under pressure has been suffering from the divers ‘bends’ and with the exception of infections and injuries were treated at the hospital recognized. However, the FDA has not the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of sports injuries, neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, migraine and stroke or other diseases such as cancer and AIDS approved, the patient population of these crooks selective sports medicine. In fact, not a doctrine supported by sound, scientifically valid, that the use. Beyond the dubious therapeutic value, there are dangers for hyperbaric therapy (convulsions, fire).

Emergencies are difficult to treat because it takes several minutes to unpack the camera, before anyone can open the hatch to help the patient. For these reasons should be based, among other things, the Company has Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine (UHMS), an established hyperbaric recommendation of the hospital.

Magnetic therapy is the rage among athletes who maintain this reduced pain and muscle aches. This includes the use of small static magnetic disks or sleeping on magnetic mattress. These magnets are very different medical devices that pulsed electromagnetic fields, which have proved effective for the treatment of fractures to produce. In fact, for most of these magnetic disks a significant magnetic field at or below the skin surface. The FDA has been studied for years the claims made by companies selling these magnets such as magnetic disks have not been approved by the FDA for this purpose (the magnets can cure, treat, mitigate or disease, n can affect ‘made any change in the human body). To avoid problems with the FDA, most suppliers emphasize only “comfort” and generally is “no medical claims are made.” Many magnetic therapy products in alternate rows of north and south poles (multipolar) of the patients. “Scope” (penetration) of this magnetic field is weak, a few millimeters at most. The most common mechanism is offered by various therapeutic effects of magnets that improves circulation, despite the apparent absence of evidence to that effect (and, despite the fact that the blood is not magnetic). Currently we have good reason to believe that magnets more healing power than crystals or copper bracelets have.

Like most things in life, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Sports medicine is not cheating me with their money or damage their physical well-being. Consult a doctor, physiotherapist or sports medicine specialist prior to placing your body (and wallet) in danger.
